JUDGMENT DAY
What will come of creation during the end times? What will happen to the earth, which we have been given to steward? What will happen in the heavens when these incredible events are set in motion? God, in His wisdom, has not left out any detail. Rather, Scripture is full of specific prophecies regarding Christâs judgment of all creationâthings both ethereal and eternal.
The Creator Judges the Creation
In Zephaniah 1:1â3, we read of the ultimate judgment of God on the entire earth at the time of the second coming of Christ. Zephaniah declared the word of the Lord: ââI will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,â declares the LORD. âI will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the sky and the fish in the seaâand the idols that cause the wicked to stumble. When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,â declares the LORDâ (vv. 2â3).
Godâs Verdict on Judah and Jerusalem
Zephaniah declared the word of the Lord against Judah and Jerusalem: âI will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalemâ (1:4). God particularly detailed that the âremnant of Baalâ (v. 4) and the names of the idolatrous priests would be judged: âI will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priestsâthose who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the LORD and who also swear by Molekâ (vv. 4â5).
Judah was compared to a prepared sacrifice (v. 7), and on the day of the Lord, princes and those wearing foreign clothes would especially be the objects of His wrath (vv. 7â8).
Zephaniah declared the word of the Lord: âWail, you who live in the market district; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade with silver will be destroyedâ (v. 11). Their houses would be taken over by others, their vineyards would provide wine for others, and their wealth would be plundered (vv. 12â13). The day of the Lord was described in detail:
The great day of the LORD is nearâ
near and coming quickly.
The cry on the day of the LORD is bitter;
the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.
That day will be a day of wrathâ
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of trouble and ruin,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and blacknessâ
a day of trumpet and battle cry
against the fortified cities
and against the corner towers.
I will bring such distress on all people
that they will grope about like those who are blind,
because they have sinned against the LORD. (vv. 14â17)
These prophecies were fulfilled in history and will be fulfilled at the second coming.
Jesus Has Authority to Sentence and Pardon
Because Jesus healed the invalid at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted Him (John 5:2â16). Because Jesus claimed God as His Father, the Jews persecuted Him all the more because they regarded this as a statement that He was equal to the Father (vv.
